about

Duo-come-couple Mumble Tide have today shared their mini-album ‘Everything Ugly’ via Nothing Fancy.

After meeting through a Gumtree ad put up by vocalist/guitarist Gina Leonard, Gina and Ryan Rogers - Mumble Tide’s other half - discovered a sense of freedom together that they hadn’t found previously and decided there and then to make Mumble Tide a judgement free zone where nothing was out of bounds. This unrestrained spirit has seen them win fans in DIY, Dork, Gigwise and Line of Best Fit in recent months as well as the primary support slot on Liz Lawrence’s tour which finished up last month. They also have a stack of dates forthcoming with Coach Party in the new year.

The paintball-splotched backdrops for Gina’s saccharine vocal perhaps best describes the duo’s ethos. Going way beyond the traditional band set-up, they achieve their sound by feedbacking 90s walkie talkies off of each other - see ‘Noodle’ - on ‘crap casio keyboards’ bought from dentists on Facebook Marketplace - see ‘Good 4 Me’- and phone recordings of squabbling swans - see ‘Breakfast’.

This chaotic sound and Gina’s visceral lyrics represents an unleashing of the frustration that has clouded their previous years. Whether it’s the stifling past projects they were involved in or the stagnation they feel living as a couple in Gina’s parents place, it comes out uncensored on ‘Everything Ugly’. This initially revealed itself on the blistering ‘Sucker’ which imagined Gina flicking two fingers up at previous baggage and strutting off into the distance. She took this one step further on the more dreamy ‘Breakfast’, petulantly declaring “Everyone’s an arsehole”.

For every dark moment though there’s a playful moment to match. The videos accompanying each of the singles have featured nerf gun fights, country bike rides and hair dryers taking on the role of wind machines. While, ‘Noodle’, a recent ‘Next Wave’ on Jack Saunders’ Radio1 show, is inspired by Ryan’s pet name for what he calls Gina’s “abnormally long neck”. On ‘Too Far Back‘ Gina sings, “Art is meant to offend you but I’ll keep it sweet like cinnamon”, though quite honestly Mumble Tide do both.

An introduction to their self-contained universe, ‘Everything Ugly’ is an unplotted course through the madness. Fasten your seatbelts.
